New temporary parent visa

The long awaited 5 year sponsored parent visa will be open for applications from 1 July 2019. A visa application will require the sponsoring child (who must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible NZ citizen) to have already been approved as a sponsor. Applications for approval as a sponsor will be open from 17 April 2019.

The visa provides the ability for parents to be temporarily reunited with their children in Australia but they are responsible for all costs during their stay, including health care costs. Applicants will not have work rights or access to Medicare. They must hold health insurance and have access to funds to support themselves. The visa will cost $5000 for a 3 year visa or $10,000 for a 5 year visa.

The introduction of this visa will also see the abolition of the visitor concessions which currently exist allowing parents or Australian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Australia for longer periods.
